Auckland's Urban Permaculture Demonstration Home
Betsy and David Kettle
Pakuranga, Manukau 1995-2001
Inspired by our Permaculture Design Course, we re-designed our 580m2 suburban section to demonstrate permaculture principles. We held monthly tours and publicised them through the local papers. Between 1995 and 2001 over 3000 people went on the garden tour, read the tour boards and took away information on a range of sustainable topics.
The project had a remarkable influence on the local community. Waitakere, North Shore City Councils adpoted rainwater harvesting bylaws, the garden was featured on TVNZ programs such as Maggie's Garden Show, My Home My Castle and 5:30 with Jude. It won an Auckland Regional Council Environment Award in 2000. This project was the inspiration for later initiatives such as Create Your Own Eden, New Lynn's Sustainable Living Centre and the Auckland Permaculture Workshop.
